Pianos for the Street 2014

The Tippecanoe Music Teachers Association is organizing a public arts piano event for the Greater Lafayette community during July 2014.   “TMTA’s Pianos for the Street” will place pianos in public areas in Lafayette and West Lafayette on July 11 and leave them on site for the public’s enjoyment until July 28.   We hope passersby will take the opportunity to sit down and play a favorite tune.  Maybe a few people will find their “inner musician.”  The goal of the project is to promote piano playing and live music making, and to give the opportunity to make music in a different way as a gift to the greater Lafayette area, which is so supportive of the arts.

Locations of the pianos in Lafayette are on Main Street between 5th and 11th streets:  K.D.’s Coffee Shop/Fuel; Blossoms and Petals; Lafayette Brewing Company; and, the Friends of Downtown office.  In West Lafayette, enjoy a piano at the West Lafayette Public Library or the Margerum Fountain Plaza at the west end of the Pedestrian bridge.

This is a multi-art project as the piano at the West Lafayette Public Library will be decorated by Jeannette Rehmel and her advanced painting class at Morton Center.  The artists of Foam City will be decorating the pianos on Main Street as well as the one at the Margerum Fountain Plaza during the two weeks the pianos are on the street.

You’ll be able to experience music across the Wabash with the opening event at 6:30pm on July 11.  Twelve TMTA members and friends will team up to play "Heart and Soul" simultaneously on all 6 pianos.

“Piano Buddies” will look after the pianos and cover them when bad weather is forecast.   We hope that people will be respectful of the pianos as they have in many other cities where this type of project has been done.

Play the Piano!  Enjoy Live Music!  Enjoy the Arts in Greater Lafayette!
